What do the numbers mean on binoculars and spotting scopes?
This is the most common question about binoculars, and it's a valid one. You'll encounter combinations of numbers like 7x35, 8x42, 10x50, or 7-15x35 and more. The numbers to the left of the "x" always indicate how much magnification the binocular has. The number to the right of the "x" indicates the size of the lens at the bottom of the binocular (known as the objective lens).
So, 7x35 means this binocular magnifies objects so they appear 7 times closer. This binocular also has a 35 mm diameter "objective lens". A 10x50 binocular magnifies objects so they appear 10 times closer and has an "objective lens" 50 mm in diameter. The 7-15x35 binocular is a zoom model because you can change the magnification from 7 times to 15 times. This binocular has a 35 mm "objective lens".
Should I buy a binocular with the highest magnification possible?
Not necessarily. Here are a few things to consider when selecting a binocular to determine what magnification will be best for you. Generally, the higher the magnification, the more difficult it will be to have a bright, steady, and wide image. Why is this? Try thinking of magnification in terms of using your portable video camera.
What happens when you ZOOM in on objects (using the highest magnification)? You'll find that several things happen:
The image is "jumpy" (it's difficult to hold the camera steady)
You only see a very small "field of view" or viewing area
The image is not as sharp and clear
The image is not as bright Generally speaking, when you increase magnification, you may increase the possibility of all the above results. Most binoculars sold today range from 7x to 10x. Zoom models offer a range of magnifications from 7x to 20x or even higher.
Why is brightness important and how do I determine how bright a binocular is?
The brighter the image when looking through a binocular or spotting scope, the better chance you will have of seeing a sharp and detailed image of objects viewed.
Brightness is affected by:
How big the "exit pupil" is of the binocular. (This is an easy thing to determine and is explained below).
The types and number of "coatings" applied to the optical system.
What is an exit pupil?
The exit pupil is the circle of light you see when holding a binocular or spotting scope about 6 inches away from your eyes and looking at the surface of the eye pieces. This little bright circle is the amount of light reaching your eyes.
The size of the exit pupil is easy to calculate. You simply divide the magnification of the binocular into the diameter of the "objective lens" or bottom lens of the binocular or spotting scope. So, a 7x35 binocular has an exit pupil diameter of 5 mm (35 divided by 7). A 10x50 binocular also has an exit pupil of 5 mm (50 divided by 10).
Why is exit pupil important?
You can use the diameter of the exit pupil calculation to determine how much relative light is available under different conditions. When we are in bright light our own eye pupil constricts to as small as 1 mm in diameter. However, in very low light such as in the afternoon or early morning our eye pupil can expand to around 7 mm. Our pupils open and close to allow enough light to see details and a sharp image.
The "exit pupil" on a binocular can be used to correspond to our own eye pupil. Generally, a 5 mm "exit pupil" will provide good brightness over many conditions. But in low light conditions, it will not provide enough light to see as your own eye pupil may want. The result is a darker image, and you may not see as much detail.
What are lens coatings?
Coatings are applied to the glass elements to reduce the amount of light with is lost due to reflections. Generally, binoculars and spotting scopes are coated with a single layer of coating applied to each glass surface. More expensive models have multi-coatings applied, which further reduce the amount of light lost to reflections.
What is wide angle?
Binoculars typically come in either standard or wide-angle designs. Wide-angle designs provide a wider field of view than standard designs. Field of view is simply the area which you can see at a certain distance. The image viewed is usually measured in the number of feet you can see across at a distance of 1000 yards. A binocular showing a field of view of 430' at 1000 yds. means you can see a horizontal distance of 430 feet when looking out to a distance of 1000 yards.
What is long eye relief and why is it important?
Eye relief is the distance from the surface of the eye piece lens where you can see the full field of view of the image you are looking at. Most binoculars have a standard eye relief distance of from 9 mm to 12 mm. This is long enough for just about everybody unless you wear eyeglasses, and you don't feel like taking your glasses off to see through the binocular!
Long eye relief is primarily a characteristic that specifically benefits people who wear eyeglasses. But it is also great for everyone else because it is great to use them when wearing sunglasses or eyeglasses! Some binoculars with long eye relief do not have a "wide-angle" field of view. This is because when designing optical systems, it is difficult to provide both long eye relief and wide angle in the same system. But several of our Alpen Pro binoculars offer both long eye relief and wide-angle field of view.
What is a fixed focus binocular?
These binoculars are great because they don't have the traditional focus wheel or eyepiece focus adjustment. They are great for action sports viewing or viewing situations where you don't want to lose time having to adjust your binocular. These binoculars are designed so that you can see objects from about 70 feet away and beyond. You just pick them up and look! Alpen offers both a standard and long eye relief design. The long eye relief model is great if you wear glasses!
What is the difference between a porro prism binocular and a roof prism binocular?
Porro prism binoculars have the "offset" design. The eye pieces are not the same distance apart at the objective lenses. Porro prism binoculars offer great viewing performance, are more "traditional" and are generally less expensive to manufacture.
"Roof prism" binoculars are distinguished by their "in-line" appearance. The eye pieces and objective lenses share the same axis. These binoculars also offer great viewing, are less bulky, and generally more expensive to manufacture.
Both prism designs can provide great viewing and it is generally just personal preference that determines which one is best for you.
What is different about compact binoculars?
Compact binoculars are developed to provide a small, lighter weight binocular which can be more easily carried. The advantages of compact binoculars is their small size, ease of use and they're great when you want to transport them with you when hiking or when larger binoculars are just not as convenient to use.
But compact binoculars don't usually offer the brightness that larger binoculars do. Remember the discussion above about "exit pupil"? Compact binoculars usually do not have big exit pupils which means in low light conditions you will not see a bright or sharp image. For example, a 10x25 compact binocular has an exit pupil of only 2.5mm. During the day this isn't a problem. But if you want to use them for early morning or late afternoon viewing they will not provide as much light as a bigger standard design binocular.
How do I decide which binoculars are best for me? Buying a binocular involves "trade-offs". To get the brightest possible image in low light conditions you need low magnification with a large "objective lens". But many of us don't want to sacrifice magnification. After all isn't this why we are buying binoculars to begin with? We want to see objects far away as though they're close! You may also want a "wide field of view" so you can see as much action as possible at a sporting event. So, you'll find that you need to know how, when and where you are most likely to use your binoculars. In the end you may decide to buy several different pairs to meet all your needs.

Wish I'd sprung for this laser rangefinder/bino combo even sooner
I wasn't sure about buying these because of the price, but I'm really glad I did. I'm tempted to say the glass is just as clear as my Swarovski EL Binoculars! And those don't even include the laser rangefrinder. Even in low light, I can see the details of deer antlers. The buttons are easy to use and don't make me lose sight of my target. These binoculars and rangefinder will replace two things I used to carry, so I won't forget or grab the wrong stuff anymore. It's simple to switch between modes, and once I've set them, they stay that way when I use the rangefinder. It's upped my hunting game in a good way.

It's NOT A GIMMICK
I thought this remote control for the delta pro was super gimmicky when I first saw it. But Lakehouse & Cottage had a deal to get it as a free gift with my Delta Pro so what the heck, I tried it out and guess what. Now I can't imagine not having it. Honestly makes life so much easier. I don't have to keep running down to the basement to check the levels on the pro or to use it. I'm sold.
I installed DIY battery technology using the delta pro to power my house for shorter outages without noise or maintenance. I started with one, but couldn't help coming back for more. 5 star service. fast shipping. excellent product. also got some free EcoFlow products as a gift with my last delta pro purchase from L&C. my advice? go for more than you think you need. you can never have too much power.
I got this as a free gift when I bought a big ol' boy STS from Lakehouse & Cottage. I've never been much for "small" but I have already found use for this. It's quiet, easy to use, and keeps my pistol right where I never thought I needed it.

I had been saving up for a long time for a pair of giant binoculars mostly for that famous "3D feeling" in the image that you can only get with binoculars. Not to mention you don't have to squint like you do with a telescope and you don't have as much noise. I know I might be in the minority when I say this, but binoculars are my go-to over telescopes even for DSO.They're also super fun for comet chasing. Which brings me to why I'm here! I was finally ready to buy my own BT to see the 12P/Pons-Brooks Comet this month, but I could not find a pair that was in stock ANYWHERE. I tried Orion, I tried Explore Scientific, I literally looked everywhere. Orion kept telling me that they had them in stock but they would arrive in like 6-8 weeks. Well I found out that's actually a lie because the manufacturer for all the BT binoculars has been on backorder for months and is not expected to have any stock anytime soon. Anyways, I finally found a pair here at Lakehouse & Cottage, but then again I was super disappointed because they told me they were dealing with the same issue with the manufacturer and didn't have them in stock. Well, that is to say I WAS disappointed until 2 days later their customer service team reached out to me directly to let me know they had tracked down a pair for me! I had seriously given up hope. But they got me a great deal and totally hooked me up. I LOVE these Vixens. They're honestly even better than I could have imagined and I'm so glad things worked out the way they did because I never would have found them on my own. Can't recommend enough.
Lakehouse & Cottage was very friendly when I called in to grill them with a bunch of questions about their bundle options. Basically, I was testing these out to find what could be a much better solution for a whole home backup as compared to my old generator. The main question I had was how long the EcoFlow Delta Pros would last just running critical loads in my house. To give a relative benchmark in the winter time my house uses about 20 to 25 kilowatt hours per 24 hour period. In the summer it's a little different scenario where I can go as high as 60 or even 70 kilowatt hours depending on the outside temperature and how much we're running our air conditioner. So far I get about 7 hours running my heavy duty things like fridges and freezers. Once I figure out how to make this more feasible of a set up with the solar panels then I think it will completely replace my old generator. Until then, I'll have to keep fine tuning this set up. Ultimate goal is to be completely on solar though so I'm ok with putting in the work to build out the right system and these guys made it easy.
My wife and I been fulltime in our new RV rig for about 2 months now with our Delta Pro solar setup. We've got 2,000 Watt of solar using the 220 Watt panels and our Delta Pro powering our entire 41ft Grand Design Momentum 5th wheel.
We both work remote inside the camper, and have had no issues so far with the system and have been able to run 2 AC's.
We used to have a 3,000w Victron Inverter setup which was around $15,000. We wanted a DIY system that was also portable if we end up selling the unit down the road. This was our best solution, and while its not 100% perfect, we are more than happy with the system we have in place! I feel obligated to mention the support team at Lakehouse & Cottage deserves a shoutout because they helped us get a great deal on the exact bundle we were looking for and shipping was fast.

I don't usually go out of my way to write reviews, but I don't think I can thank the L&C staff enough for helping me pick my perfect scope. Really wanted something to obsess over and they helped me narrow it down immensley. Having a ton of fun with this R200SS scope and I'm grateful they didn't try to just convince me to get the biggest most expensive one. Thank you for answering all my "stupid" questions! You guys rock and I'll be back.
I needed a safe for my guns and important papers. When I called to ask about this safe, they were able to answer all my questions and suggested this was a good fit.They were right. It weighs around 200 lbs heavier than others of similar size. It has a great fire rating, and I like the electronic lock. The Winchester name is a USA Legend through and through. Very happy with this safe and the L&C staff. I was really impressed.

Updating my review with an additional star, although it falls short of a perfect five-star rating. After my unit failed at the 12-month mark, I made an appeal and received a new replacement unit. While I appreciate that, the warranty on the replacement is now only for one year, not the original two-year term. It's a bit disappointing—either you have confidence in your product's quality or you don't. However, I must acknowledge their great customer service. My once strong affinity for Ecoflow has waned. The backup Delta I purchased a year ago failed. But on a positive note, Lakehouse & Cottage customer service is prompt and supportive. I'll come back to buy from them but my next purchase will likely be from another brand.
I'm eyeing another one along with an extra battery for upstairs. L&C made this kit incredibly user-friendly—plug and play all the way. And if you hit a snag, there's a video guide for every step. I only needed to double-check a couple of things—setting up the brackets initially and then sorting out the cable hookup. Some folks reckon this generator is noisy, but personally, I don't find it bothersome. It's a straightforward and pleasant kit. Being a 60-year-old and not in the best health, I managed to set it all up on my own. I'd definitely recommend it.
This was a purchase I didn't wnat to make, but I'm glad I made it. Southern California Edison has been having frequent "planned power outages" in my area since before the big COVID shutdown in America. In just the last two weeks, we've had three such outages that span the morning through the afternoon. Dealing with replacing my garage refrigerator, repairing the main fridge twice, and constantly keeping the refrigerator doors closed during outages to prevent food spoilage became tiresome. After enduring numerous planned and unplanned outages, I eventually caved and invested in the Ecoflow Delta.
While a gas-powered generator was an option, its weight, the hassle of carrying it upstairs alone, inability to store it indoors, and the noise it would generate for hours during use made it less appealing. When the last planned power outage hit three days ago, I charged the Ecoflow to 100% and connected our full-sized refrigerator to it—it worked like a charm. Now, even during the scorching summer heat in SoCal, when the power is out for hours, our fridge remains unaffected. We can easily access our food and drinks despite the outage. I did my research to ensure the wattage met my needs, and I'm pleased with the product.
