Differences between Vixen VC200L Catadioptric Telescope, Vixen VMC200L Telescope, and Vixen R200SS Newtonian Reflector

Vixen R200SS

Discover the universe like never before. The Vixen R200SS is a very fast scope that produces extremely sharp images with no chromatic aberration. It's a highly developed tool for observing and photographing deep-sky objects.

Vixen VMC200L

This is a Maksutov-Cassegrain Optical Design that provides an all-encompassing visual stargazing experience. The Vixen VMC200L is an amazing visual telescope if you are not interested in astrophotography.

Vixen VC200L

One of the most sophisticated optical designs available on the market today. This is not a Schmidt-Cassegrain or a Maksutov-Cassegrain, but instead a unique creation all of its own: a catadioptric Vixen Sixth-Order Aspheric Cassegrain (VISAC) optical system.

The aspherical mirror optics elevate your astrophotography experience with short focal lengths that capture stunning views and deep-sky objects, and long focal lengths that bring distant wonders into focus.

Advanced Mirrors - No Dew Collection, Quick Cooling

Vixen has developed a unique aluminum vacuum evaporation system that produces extremely precise mirror surfaces. This allows for controlled coating of the primary mirror for greater accuracy and NO DEW collection. This coating is used on both the VC200L and the R200SS.

Unbelievable Astrophotography

The Vixen VC200L Telescope is a masterpiece in optical design and astrophotography imaging (see real photo from VC200L directly above). Unlike traditional telescopes, it has a fully flat and true-color image across the entire frame. Say goodbye to spherical aberration, coma, and field curvature, thanks to the three-element field corrector paired with the convex secondary mirror. For the first time ever, you can enjoy clear open views of the vastness of deep space.

Capture breathtaking images in a cinch. Achieve pinpoint star images less than 15 microns, even at the edges of its 42mm image circle. Plus the sharpness and flatness at the edges far surpass Schmidt-Cassegrain systems of the same aperture.

FAQ

What are the main differences between the VC200L, VMC200L, and R200SS telescopes?

The VC200L is a catadioptric telescope with a 200mm aperture, utilizing Vixen's own Sixth-Order Aspheric Cassegrain (VISAC) optical system. The aspherical mirror optics elevate your astrophotography experience with short focal lengths that capture stunning views and deep-sky objects, and long focal lengths that bring distant wonders into focus. The VMC200L is a Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope but features a Modified Cassegrain optical system with a more compact design. It is often considered more of a visual telescope than a go-to for astrophotography. And the R200SS is a Newtonian Reflector telescope with a very quick 200 mm F/4 aperture. This makes it wonderful for astrophotography and viewing galaxies and nebulae.

Can these telescopes be used for astrophotography?

Yes, all three telescopes are suitable for astrophotography. However, it's essential to note that the VMC200L and R200SS may require additional accessories like field flatteners and coma correctors for optimal imaging results.

Are these telescopes suitable for beginners?

While the VC200L and VMC200L may be suitable for beginners with some experience in astronomy, the R200SS, being a reflector telescope, might have a steeper learning curve. However, all three models offer great performance for amateur astronomers seeking quality optics.

What mount is recommended for these telescopes?

Vixen offers a variety of mounts compatible with these telescopes, including equatorial and alt-azimuth mounts. The choice of mount depends on your specific needs and preferences.

Can these telescopes be used for terrestrial viewing?

Yes, with the appropriate accessories, such as erect-image diagonal or correctors, these telescopes can be used for terrestrial observation.

At that point, the customer will be notified that the item needs to be returned to Japan for repair. Customer will be informed of bi‐directional shipping costs related to returning the product to Vixen headquarters in Japan. To reduce those costs, Lakehouse & Cottage will be consolidating shipments to Japan once a month, and said product will also return together once corrected.

Really Pleased with my VIXEN VC200L

After reading and pondering for a while, I decided that my next telescope for taking pictures of the stars should be a VIXEN VC200L. I wanted something with a good amount of focal length for the smaller objects, and I also desired a flat field – a true astrograph. After some research, two telescopes stood out to me: the VIXEN VC200L and the Celestron Edge HD 8. The larger versions were too heavy for my Skywatcher HEQ5 pro mount. I'm not a fan of spikes, but in the end, I preferred the photos from the VIXEN a bit more than those from the Edge HD. So, I made the decision to purchase the VIXEN. I plan to use the telescope in the following setups:

VIXEN at 1800mm with EOS M100a
VIXEN at 1280mm with a .71 reducer and EOS M100a

I've included a simple optical test with each. The first shows a single large shining star. I think it looks pretty good; however, the stars in the lower left corner could still be a bit better. Perhaps the tube needs some tweaking. Further tests will reveal what adjustments are still needed.

In my optical test with the second configuration the stars at the edges look a bit crazy, so I'll need to make some adjustments to be truly satisfied with the results.

But all in all, I must say that I am really pleased with my new VC200L. I'm excited and having a lot of fun using it.

I love my VMC200L and I've brought it out for friends who have C8s. This is what I've gathered as the difference between them:
-For views, the flat field is a huge plus. there is pretty much no visible coma or field curvature.
-It doesn't dew. At all. It can still go strong after my SCT and refractor friends have packed up. Even when I haven't added any dew shield or heaters.
-I've heard some complaints about the C8 having a sloppier focuser.
-I cannot get over the carry handle since I am also usually carrying a bunch of other stuff too.
As an astrograph, it's damn near perfect.
The way I see it, if you can handle the price difference, the Vixen VC or VMC is better than the C8, they don't dew up, and are much better out of the box for imaging.

telescope is amazing. customer service was even better.

I don't usually go out of my way to write reviews, but I don't think I can thank the L&C staff enough for helping me pick my perfect scope. Really wanted something to obsess over and they helped me narrow it down immensley. Having a ton of fun with this R200SS scope and I'm grateful they didn't try to just convince me to get the biggest most expensive one. Thank you for answering all my "stupid" questions! You guys rock and I'll be back.
